Its purchase is accompanied by the solution of many issues, the first of which is the choice of a gearbox. And here many have a problem, what to choose: an automatic machine or a robot? Indeed, what is the fundamental difference between these transmissions?


Automatic transmission consists of a torque converter and a reducer. The torque converter replaces the clutch. The gearbox contains all pairs of gears that are in constant mesh. Thanks to this mechanism, the automatic, depending on the engine speed, itself, without the participation of the driver, switches speeds. That is, in this case, electronics are practically absent.

The robot resembles a manual transmission, but has a control unit consisting of hydraulic and servo drives. They control the operation of the clutch and gear shifting. Switching takes place here, like in simple mechanics, only a person does not need to interfere in this process.

Performance characteristics

The automatic greatly simplifies driving, thereby significantly reducing driver fatigue, especially in traffic jams. The automatic machine features smooth and soft, almost imperceptible gear shifting. The disadvantages of the machine include high fuel consumption, especially in urban areas, and very expensive repairs.

The advantages of a robotic gearbox include high efficiency. So, unlike automatic machines, robots allow transferring engine torque to the wheel drives of a car without significant losses. In addition, the robot is easy to maintain, the cost of repairing it is practically the same as repairing a manual transmission. Fuel consumption corresponds to the indicators of a mechanical box, and in some cases, for example, in city mode, the robot is even more economical. In addition, the oil consumption of the robot is significantly lower than that of the machine.

The robot supports manual gear shifting, which cannot be said about the machine. At the same time, the robot changes gears very slowly, and jerks and jerks are often encountered during its operation. A robotic transmission is a rather unstable transmission. Under the same conditions, even on two identical machines, the robot will not work in the same way.
