Difference between perfume and eau de toilette

Scientists have done some research and found that the sexiest smell for humans is the smell of manure. The conclusion is original, but, fortunately, it did not undermine the perfume industry, which produces a wide variety of aromas in abundance: cold, warm, sweet, brutal, feminine, smoky, alcoholic. There is even a book page perfume for special reading devotees. What does this mean? Humanity likes to smell good. But how not to get lost in all the variety of perfumes, fragrances, eau de toilette and many other representatives of the army of perfume? Today we will talk about perfumes and eau de toilette, how they differ and what they serve.

Spirits - known since the time of Ancient Egypt, then they were used very often as one of the obligatory elements of sacrifices and worship of the gods. However, especially wealthy people simply indulged themselves with exquisite perfume. The popularity of perfumes was such that even in the Bible there are several references to their use in the form of aromatic oils. According to legend, the first perfume was invented in Mesopotamia, and then from there spread throughout Egypt, Ancient Rome and Persia. According to the name, per fume is translated "through the smoke." They were obtained mainly from an extract that was extracted from flowers. Avicenna himself was engaged in a similar business through distillation. The same procedure is used to this day. The first samples of perfumery came to Europe in the fourteenth century, thanks to Islam. Currently, a classic perfume recipe has been developed: first comes the initial note, then the heart note, and then the final one.

Eau de toilette - this term appeared in the world only in the nineteenth century. It is believed that Napoleon I introduced this name. While on the island of St. Helena, he once ran out of cologne, then the disgraced emperor came up with his own version of fragrant water with a particle of bergamot. He called his innovation eau de toilette, and the term took on an official meaning. However, if you dig into the depths of the centuries, you can find out that in the ancient world, sheds, pets were sprayed with fragrant water, and even let through the fountains. But as soon as Rome fell, eau de toilette migrated to the East.

At its core, eau de toilette is a fragrance perfume in the form of a solution of fragrant substances in alcohol. If we consider the content of essential oils in it, then here they are from 4 to 10 percent. The fragrance is more subtle and less persistent when compared to perfume. In addition, eau de toilette contains less aromatic base (oils).

The main difference between perfume and eau de toilette is in the higher content of the perfume composition (a combination of essential oils, balms and other components) - 15-30 and more percent in 96% alcohol. At the same time, eau de toilette contains only 4-10 (sometimes 12) percent of the composition, and the rest is 85% alcohol. Obviously, in this situation, the smell of perfume will last much longer, while eau de toilette evaporates much faster.

There is also a noticeable difference in the price category. It is more difficult to create perfumes, they use more raw materials, therefore, their cost is noticeably higher than that of eau de toilette.

Making perfume is a difficult task. Exquisite fashionable bottles are created for them, while the approach to eau de toilette is simpler.
