Difference between norm and standard.

In science, jurisprudence and a number of other branches of knowledge, the concepts of norms and standards are often used. What are their features?

What is the norm?

The concept “ norm ” is very broad. It can be used in various fields. For example, such as:

  • industry;
  • legal relationship;
  • social relations;
  • finance.

If you try to derive a "universal" definition of the norm, then it may sound like this. This is an average indicator that reflects the content and volume of human actions that lead to a certain result, in some cases - also the content and volume of this result (for example, in industry it can be the amount of products produced by a factory per unit of time).

Norms are generally accepted to be followed. They are, therefore, indicators that it is desirable to achieve. The norm can be formalized (for example, in the source of law) or take shape historically (this applies, in particular, to social norms). In the first case, it is often presented in the form of a standard. Consider what it is.

What is a standard?

The concept “ norm ” is as broad as “norm”. In principle, it can be used (sometimes - with reservations) in the same areas that we have indicated above. Most often, the concept of "standard" is used in industry and finance. In social relations, it is not very common. That is, the phrase "behavior norm" is often encountered, but the term "behavior norm" is used quite rarely. The same can be said about legal relationships. The concept of “rule of law” is used by lawyers on a regular basis, but “norm of law” is a rare term.

Under the standard, if, again, we take its “universal” definition, we mean an indicator that reflects the obligatory volume of a person's actions leading to a certain result, in some cases - the volume of the corresponding result. For example, in industry, this can be the number of products that a factory must produce in a month.

A standard is an indicator that is always accepted to follow. There can be no recommendations for him. If the norm denotes the average performance of any human actions, which it makes sense to adhere to, then the norm is a specific goal that a person must achieve through his work.

In those areas where the term “normative” is used much less frequently than the first concept, the word “norm” can be synonymous with this term in a number of contexts. For example, this is possible if we are talking about the established criteria for human behavior in a particular community. If following them is obligatory for others, due to the regularity of character, then they should be considered as "standards". But since, as we noted above, the phrase “norm of behavior” is rarely used, in order to designate the corresponding social rules, the phrase “norm of behavior” is used - as a synonym for the term in question.

Comparison

The main difference between a norm and a norm is that adherence to it, as a rule, is desirable or highly encouraged. It is often for reference, descriptive. The standard, in turn, is the volume of human actions or their results, which must be performed under the given conditions.

The norm and the norm are related to each other. The first indicator in most cases becomes the basis for determining the second. That is, first, the most characteristic volume of actions for a person or their result is identified, and the employee's capabilities in terms of regularly achieving this value are established. A norm is being formed - an indicator typical for the corresponding actions or their result. And if it is recognized as regularly achievable, then it turns into a standard that most people must follow - this is expected of them. Both indicators can be very close or the same. But it can also be determined that the standard should be higher or lower than the norm - based on the likelihood of its successful implementation by people under given conditions.

In those areas where the term “norm” is rarely used (for example, in combination with the terms “law”, “behavior”), in a number of contexts it can be replaced by the word “norm”. In this case, they will be synonymous.

Having determined what is the difference between the norm and the norm, we will reflect the conclusions in the table.
