The difference between a jacket and a cardigan.

It is easy to get confused in the variety of styles of modern clothing. In order not to use the wrong term at the most inopportune moment, we will find out in advance how the jacket differs from the cardigan.

Definitions

Jacket is a lightweight type of women's outerwear with or without fasteners. Like a coat, it can be single or double-breasted, but it is made from less warm materials: thick knitwear or various types of wool.

Jacket

Cardigan is one of the variations of the jacket. Its distinguishing feature from other types is that the front part consists of two halves. They can be fastened with buttons, a zipper or fixed in a zipped position with a belt. Cardigans are knitted, cotton, mohair, silk from mixed and synthetic fibers, etc. This thing can become a part of both a woman's and a man's image.

Cardigan

Similarity

Most of the design elements of the cardigan and jacket are identical. They both can have a long or short sleeve, pockets, collar, belt. The fastening options are also the same: buttons, zippers, hooks.

Both a cardigan and a jacket are not accepted to be worn on a naked body. They always serve as a second layer in the image, put on over tops, T-shirts, shirts, long sleeves, etc. A women's jacket can also be combined with things made of denser fabrics: turtlenecks, sweaters, woolen dresses, etc.

Despite the apparent similarity, there are many differences between the jacket and the cardigan.

Difference

Design jackets are closer to outerwear. They often replace jackets and trench coats for women in warm weather. Due to rather dense fabrics, jackets keep their shape well. In contrast to them, cardigans are made of softer fabrics, therefore they are able to fit the body more tightly.

The length of the jacket is usually up to the waist or a few centimeters lower. Cardigans have a much wider range of variations. They end minimally at the waist and reach the ankle as much as possible.

A classic cut for a jacket - fitted. But modern designers also create straight models. Cardigan for women can be tight-fitting, semi-fitted, straight, free cut. Men's models traditionally have a straight silhouette.
