How to spell correctly: sheet or sheet?.

The use of noun formssheetandsheetin speech is explained by the fact that two ways of their formation have been fixed in the Russian language, one of which corresponds to stable linguistic norms, and the other reflects the tendencies of the emergence of colloquial variants of word usage.

In the spelling dictionaries the normative form of the nounis fixedwith the productive ending–я, with the help of which the nominative case of feminine nouns of the 1st declension in the singular is formed:land, relatives, roof, family, sheet.

The colloquial formsheetarose by analogy with a number of feminine nouns having a truncated ending in the nominative case:autumn, dark, wormwood, shadow, fathom [eleven]. This type of noun makes up a relatively small group of words. Their distinctive morphological feature is the absence of speech variants with the ending–я. The wordsheetdoes not have this feature, therefore, it is incorrect to refer it to a noun with a truncated ending, from the point of view of word formation.
