How to choose rollers for a child?

Having learned to ride, a teenager will definitely try his hand at more difficult combinations, up to extreme riding, so it is better to choose boots with high lacing, in which each loop is sequentially tightened. Better yet, buy quick lace rollers. It simplifies and speeds up the process of tightening the loops: just pull on the ends of the laces - and the required fixing strength is achieved.

Which is better: quads or inline rollers

In children's rollers every detail is important, but special attention should be paid to the way the wheels are fastened, their size and quality.

Models for children have 4 wheels that attach to the frame in pairs or in one line. Inline skates with pair bindings are called quads. They are stable and, although they do not give the opportunity to develop high speed, they are better suited for figure skating than any other model.

Rollers-quads

Fastening wheels in one line has the name "inline", which is widespread among rollers. Here options are possible: the convenience, speed and safety of riding depend on the diameter of the wheels and the presence of an additional braking function. Inline rollers with wheel diameters from 86 to 100 mm are high-speed and are popular with experienced athletes.

Standard inline rollers

A child who is just mastering the basics of skating will find it difficult to maintain balance on such skates. The optimum diameter of wheels for children and teenagers skates is 70-80 mm. Their rigidity should be moderate to provide shock absorption on bumps. It is usually indicated directly on the wheel. For children's models, this is a marking from 78 A to 85 A.

Vibration is also damped by the Antishock system, which is used in rather expensive roller skates manufactured by Rollerblade and K2. However, the price in this case reflects high quality. In addition, most models from these manufacturers are equipped with active braking, which minimizes the risk of injury when falling at high speeds.

What should be the wheels in children's rollers

When choosing rollers for a child, you need to find out what material the wheels are made of: ordinary plastic, polyvinyl chloride or polyurethane.

The lettering PVC indicates that the wheels are made of PVC, the main characteristics of which are considered to be increased wear resistance and an average level of rigidity.

Polyurethane wheels are PU designation. It can be considered a top quality mark that guarantees the reliability and durability of the product. The stiffness of PU wheels depends on the model type and ranges from soft samples for children's skates to the hardest ones for aggressive skates.

Regular plastic is cheap, but not the most suitable material for inline skates. Plastic wheels quickly fail and often require replacement after a few rides in the usual walking mode.

Protective equipment

To protect the child from bruises, abrasions and other injuries, it is necessary to purchase protective equipment for riding: helmet, knee and elbow pads, wrist pads. They are sold complete with roller skates, but individual protection elements can be selected on your own, guided by your own ideas about the advisability of such a purchase, the quality and reliability of accessories.

Protective equipment is important!

The helmet must have a soft inner lining, fit and be comfortable in all respects, so it must be tried on: if the child feels uncomfortable in this particular headgear, it should be replaced with another, more suitable model.

Protection for arms and legs is provided by pads with a durable outer layer of polymer materials and a soft inner layer of elastic synthetic fabrics. They soften the impact of a fall and prevent damage to the skin. Wrist pads are needed to protect the wrist area from bruises and fractures. It is not out of place to take care of the protection of children's palms: for this you need to buy special gloves, choosing the right size for them.
