Difference between water-based and water-based paint.

Sooner or later, each of us has to think about carrying out repairs to our "personal environment", no matter if it is permanent or temporary. And already at the planning stage of repair and construction work, a lot of questions arise, and some of them the home-grown foremen have no clear answers to. One of the main problems is the choice of building materials. Today, the assortment of specialized stores is so rich that it is often necessary to consult a specialist in order to figure out, for example, what is the difference between water-based paint and water-based paint.

It was not in vain that we cited paint as an example. Paints and varnishes (hereinafter paintwork materials) are one of the most important components of any repair. Moreover, water-based paints are among the most popular due to their relative cheapness and environmental benefits. Therefore, as you probably already guessed, the conversation in our article will focus on them. Immediately, we will say that these are very close in composition and properties of paintwork materials, but some differences between them are still present.

Water-based paint (VEM)

This type of paintwork materials refers to the old and well-known building and finishing materials. At one time, it was the main paint used in construction, both at the household level and at the industrial level.

Water-based paints have a number of advantages:

  • no smell;
  • fast drying (on average 2-6 hours, complete drying up to 24 hours);
  • environmental safety;
  • ease of use;
  • availability and low cost.

Most of these advantages are in one way or another inherent in VDK (water dispersion paint).

The VEM contains water, which contains a suspension of polymer particles and a coloring pigment, plus all sorts of additives. There are paint types with silicone or acrylic resin binders. Let's list the most common types of water-based paints:

  • acrylic;
  • silicate;
  • silicone;
  • mineral.

The cheapest and well-known paint is based on mineral additives (lime, cement). It is widely used in many paint jobs. However, this type of paint has a major drawback - it is short-lived. Although, on the other hand, this disadvantage is offset by its low price.

Today, an aqueous emulsion with polyacrylate in its composition is considered to be the optimal universal paint coating. It is relatively inexpensive, fits almost all major surfaces and has a long service life.

And, finally, a water emulsion, the main component of which, in addition to water, is a silicone resin. Differs in high quality and appearance. Suitable for all paint jobs and surfaces. The most persistent in comparison with "colleagues in the shop". It has one, but quite a significant drawback - this is the most expensive option among water-based paints.

Water-based paint (WDC)

As we mentioned at the beginning of the article, the difference between water-based paint and water-based paint is minimal. Therefore, now we will give general characteristics of the VDK, and only then we will move on to the differences between them.

Recently, water-based paints have become widespread. They became, as it were, a further development of VEM. A constituent element of VDK is an aqueous dispersion bound by polyvinyl acetate, acrylic or latex components. Accordingly, there are 3 main types of this paint:

  • based on PVA;
  • latex;
  • acrylic water dispersion.

Polyvinyl acetate (PVA) paint is the cheapest and, of course, the most popular against the backdrop of the desire for universal savings. However, the low cost is not due to some kind of philanthropy on the part of manufacturers, but rather tangible shortcomings. It should not be used in rooms with high humidity, it is very easily soiled. That is, a bathroom, a kitchen are immediately excluded from priority objects, and this significantly reduces the scope of its use in finishing work and household repairs.

Latex paint is of much better quality, it is not afraid of moisture, it washes well and is not afraid of the problem of pollution. However, the price is already higher.

Last on the list is an acrylic water dispersion. As you probably already guessed, the best, highest quality, universal, etc. But for all good things you have to pay. Unsurprisingly, this is the most expensive paint among the members of the water dispersion group.

Let's list the main advantages of paintwork materials on a water dispersion basis:

  • fast drying - from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the composition of VDR;
  •
  • resistance to fading in the sun (ultraviolet);
  • excellent adhesion to almost any surface;
  • “breathes” well (vapor permeability);
  • high durability (up to 20 years, subject to strict adherence to the technological process).

But there are spots on the sun too. The most noticeable is the high demands on the performance of paintwork. Only thorough observance of all conditions for painting guarantees a high-quality result:

  • thorough preparation of the painted surface;
  • strict adherence to proportions when thinning paint with a solvent;
  • application of the number of layers - exactly as specified in the instructions;
  • does not like cold, during operation the temperature must be at least 50С (this also applies to VEM).

Water dispersion is usually produced in white, but this can be easily corrected by adding the desired color pigment.

Comparison

Comparing everything that we have learned about these types of LMC, we can say that they are close relatives, but not twins. Differences are small, but there are. Let's write them down in the table for clarity.

Table

So, we hope that our article gave you a clear idea of the difference between water-based paint and water-based paint. So, when you visit a construction supermarket, you will not you will have to be embarrassed, asking the ever-busy consultants about the advantages and disadvantages of these paintwork materials. Now you are sufficiently savvy in this matter and you yourself can advise anyone.
