Difference between speaker and subwoofer.

Many speaker systems use speakers and subwoofers. What are they?

Facts about speakers

Under a speaker is generally understood to be any electronic device designed to reproduce sound (analog or digital) in a certain space (room, hall) or in the open air. The specific place of application of the speaker will depend on its power and manufacturability.

In a narrow sense, a speaker is a relatively low-power acoustic device designed to reproduce sound in a small area - within a room or even an area of a computer desk, if we are talking about a speaker for a PC. The sound quality on such devices is not expected to be the highest - largely due to the fact that only the base frequencies are reproduced on them.

"Regular" speakers are usually inexpensive. Or - they are completely supplied as part of a computer, and therefore there is no need to buy them. If you purchase external speakers with similar characteristics, then you will most likely not be able to achieve significantly higher sound quality. But you can do it if you buy a subwoofer. Let's consider the features of this device in more detail.

Facts about subwoofers

A subwoofer is, strictly speaking, a kind of speaker, if by it we mean any device designed to reproduce sound. But it is almost never called a “speaker”, since it is a much more technologically advanced device than one that is designed to reproduce sound in a room.

A subwoofer is a device capable of reproducing sound streams at low frequencies starting from 5 Hz. These frequencies are important from the point of view of high-quality reproduction of special effects in films, as well as many types of modern music. Listening to melodies with a subwoofer, the user, even if he is not an experienced music lover, will feel that the sound is reproduced much better than on "ordinary" speakers.

Comparison

The main difference between a speaker and a subwoofer is that the former is not as adapted as the latter for reproducing low frequencies. That is why the quality of playing special effects and music when using a "normal" speaker can be noticeably lower than when using a subwoofer.

Having determined what is the difference between a speaker and a subwoofer, we fix its criteria in the table.
