Difference between PhD and PhD.

A person striving to become a scientist enters graduate school and writes a candidate's thesis, and then, if there is a desire and opportunity, he studies for a doctorate and prepares a doctoral dissertation. What is the specificity of both types of scientific works?

What is a PhD thesis?

Under Ph. D. thesis is meant a scientific work that is written by a person during his postgraduate studies (after graduation) and is defended in order to obtain the degree of candidate of sciences. It is characterized by a significantly deeper revision of the topic in comparison, for example, with a thesis or master's thesis.

An applicant for the title of candidate must show in his work that he has the ability to identify current topics, define research problems, formulate and solve problems of a scientific nature, and prove the consistency of his own theoretical concepts in practice.

Having written his Ph. D., a postgraduate student publishes articles based on the materials of his scientific work in publications accredited by the Higher Attestation Commission, or HAC.

The defense of the work involves:

  • writing an abstract;
  • Obtaining feedback from reviewers.

The defense of the thesis takes place in front of a special commission, which meets and carries out its work in accordance with the rules of the Higher Attestation Commission. The postgraduate student talks about the main theses of his scientific work, the achieved research results, their applicability in practice, gives answers to the questions of the commission.

What is a doctoral dissertation?

Under doctoral dissertation is understood a scientific work that is written by students of doctoral studies and defended in order to obtain the degree of Doctor of Science. Almost always, admission to its writing is associated with the availability of a defended candidate's work and the corresponding academic degree.

Doctoral dissertation presupposes even higher quality and more detailed scientific research than the candidate's. Its main feature is its practical orientation. The doctoral program should contain theses that can be used for the benefit of the scientific, industrial or social sphere, the problems of which the applicant investigates in his work. Another important criterion for a doctorate is fundamental novelty. The dissertation should not repeat the theses of other well-known works or be similar to them.

The defense of a doctoral thesis is carried out in general in the same manner as in the defense of a candidate's thesis: the applicant supplements his project with an author's abstract, reviews, after which he personally submits it to the commission.

Comparison

The main difference between a candidate's and a doctoral dissertation is that the first type of scientific work is written by an applicant in the status of a graduate student, the second - by a person who studies in doctoral studies, that is, an institution where they go to acquire knowledge in in order to obtain a higher academic degree. Both theses are defended according to similar schemes.

A person can become a doctor of sciences only on condition of preliminary defense of a candidate's dissertation. In some cases, based on the results of the protection of the work of a graduate student, the attestation commission allows the submission of the corresponding work (if it has the highest level of quality and study of the topic) for defense in the framework of the degree of doctor.

Having determined what is the difference between the candidate's and doctoral dissertations, let us record the conclusions in a small table.
